Mike Smith is the successor of Paris Coffee Shop as his father, Gregory K. Smith, bought the original location south of downtown at the corner of Hemphill and Magnolia. The name originates from the initial owner, Vic Paris. Mike explains"my father was uneducated like so many were in those days, but he loved to cook and it made him successful." In the beginning they only served dinner with white linen tables and water coolers, but in 1971 the menu changed. When Mr. G. Smith, became ill in 1965, Mike, the youngest of seven boys and the only one left at home at the time, was left to take over. "My dad had me in the kitchen every summer when I was a boy peeling apples or cleaning okra. That was the one job I hated worse than anything because it made me itch all over."
In 1974 Paris Coffee Shop moved and took up residency in today's daytime business area and hospital district. The building was built in 1927 and use to be a Safeway grocery store. In 2002 the property was purchase and Paris Coffee Shop is here to stay.
